Reminder to comment on proposed car-free zone in Bellville

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to remind members of the public, businesses and road users to submit comments, input and recommendations on the proposal to close a portion of South Street in Bellville Central to make it a car-free zone. The public information day is on Saturday, 8 March 2025, from 09:00 to 12:00 at the Bellville Public Library in Carl van Aswegen Street. The closing date for comments is Monday, 17 March 2025.
‘This is a gentle reminder to those who can make it to the Bellville Public Library this Saturday to take part in the public information day on the pedestrianisation of South Street. The Bellville CBD Local Spatial Development Framework was approved by Council in December 2023 and guides the regeneration of the Bellville CBD as the City’s second metropolitan node. The conversion of a section of South Street into a pedestrian street forms part of our public realm strategy to enhance pedestrian safety. Streets are not for cars only. An open and fully pedestrianised street that is safe to enjoy promotes a street culture buzz and a reimagining of our streetscapes,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The proposal is to not allow vehicular traffic along South Street between Durban Road and Charl Malan Street.
‘It is our intention to upgrade South Street into a quality public environment where informal trading occurs and pedestrians are able to walk around and enjoy the local environment without having to watch out for vehicles. To achieve this, we propose to close a portion of South Street to general traffic, which will allow full pedestrianisation, and potentially only allow deliveries in a controlled environment,’ said Councillor Quintas.
